| CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education (formerly NNEB): This is probably the most well known childcare qualification. Students will have completed a two year course with part of the course being spent in practical placements, including a family setting. It covers the ages 0-7 years and is full time. CACHE also now run a one year course in childcare and education. BTEC – National Diploma in Nursery Nursing: This is again a two year full time course. Similar modules are covered to those in the above CACHE course, including social work and teaching. GNVQ’s – National Vocational Qualifications: There are varying levels of NVQ, the key points of which are highlighted below. It is important to note that NVQ’s are gained whilst in a working environment. Level 2: Students complete units dealing with physical, emotional and social development of a child. This gives the student a first step into childcare for instance as a Mothers Help but not in a sole charge position. Level 3: This develops the student’s knowledge to a point where they are able to work with children without supervision. This is largely recognised to be equivalent to the DCE (formerly NNEB). Level 4: This level of NVQ would generally be undertaken by a Nanny wanting to work in a supervisory or managerial position. NAMCW – National Assessment for Maternal & Child Welfare: This course is available in both one and two year formats. The one year course covers basic aspects of childcare although would not prepare the student for a sole charge position. The two year course, however, is largely recognised to be equivalent to the CACHE (formerly NNEB). OCN Maternity
